How Turboflo® Delivers More with Less

Turboflo® is a drag-reducing agent (DRA) that minimizes turbulence inside pipelines, allowing liquid hydrocarbons to move more efficiently. By altering the flow dynamics, Turboflo® enables operators to increase throughput, lower energy consumption, and reduce operating pressure.

01

Turbulent Flow

In turbulent flow, liquid molecules move chaotically, creating friction and energy loss within the pipeline. This drag limits throughput and increases pumping requirements. Turboflo® works by disrupting this turbulence, smoothing flow and reducing resistance. The Reynolds number, an indicator of flow dynamics, helps predict how effectively Turboflo® will reduce drag in a given system.
02

Pressure Reduction

Optimal pipeline operations depends on consistent pumping pressure to deliver flow capacity. Due to aging systems, corrosion, abrasions, and pipeline bottlenecks, lowered Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP) can result in reduced throughputs. Utilizing DRA allows pipelines to maintain optimal throughput while operating at the lowered MAOP.
03

Flow Increase

Turboflo® drag reducing agents align turbulent fluid molecules to create a linear, energy efficient flow. By adding only a few parts per million of Turboflo® DRA, drag within a pipeline system can potentially be reduced by as much as 80% and the flow rate can increase up to 100%. Utilizing DRA allows the pipeline to operate at a higher flow rate while maintaining the same pressure.
04

Drag Reduction Performance

Percent drag reduction compares the differential frictional pressure drop required to move a given fluid in a set pipeline with and without DRA. The graph represents a range of performance curves for Turboflo® DRA in various hydrocarbons. DRA injection rate is shown in parts per million (ppm) versus the delivered performance measured in percentage drag reduction (%DR).

Light / Medium Crude

Turboflo® AQ and SVX maximize performance in light to medium crude oil pipelines with API gravity above 23°. AQ’s aqueous-based, ultra-stable suspension prevents clogging and eliminates the need for agitation, while SVX’s food-grade oil carrier dissolves rapidly, making it ideal for both long-haul and short pipeline systems. Both formulations are non-hazardous, non-flammable, and support up to 80% drag reduction.

Heavy crude

Turboflo® EXL is optimized for heavy crude pipelines and performs exceptionally in high-viscosity conditions. It achieves up to 50% drag reduction and is proven to reduce energy use by up to 60%. Its non-toxic formulation supports both safety and sustainability, and it's fully compatible with global refinery processes.

Refined Fuels

Turboflo® TRX is formulated for refined fuels and offers exceptional stability and rapid dissolution, making it ideal for pipelines transporting finished products. It's compatible with refining processes and delivers up to 80% drag reduction, while ensuring clean flow and no residue buildup.

Multi-Phase Fluids

Turboflo® SVX is a trusted solution for multiphase crude transport. With its ultra-high molecular weight polymer formula suspended in natural oil, it achieves rapid dissolution and long-term stability in mixed-phase flow. Suitable for both long-haul pipelines and short transfer lines, SVX balances energy savings and flow enhancement.

Tanker Loading / Short Pipelines

When timing and turnaround matter, Turboflo® TRX and SVX offer fast-acting solutions for short pipelines such as tanker loading, unloading systems, or transfer lines. Their rapid dissolution prevents clogging, reduces pressure spikes, and maintains operational flow without delay.

Specialty / Custom Blends

Not all pipelines are created equal, and neither are our DRAs. Flowchem offers specialized Turboflo® formulations designed for niche fluids, unique temperature ranges, or regulatory environments. If you’re facing complex performance challenges, our chemists and engineers will build a solution around your system.

Tailored to Fit,
Built to Flex

No two pipelines are alike. Turboflo® is supported by Flowchem’s engineering and technical services teams to ensure every solution is aligned with your system’s needs. Injection strategies, blend ratios, and support programs are tailored for maximum performance.
